Salam Syria - news from our group -

Our group on their tour Cairo to Istanbul have just left Syria and through Turkey. Tour leader Dave told us how they got on ...

Oasis Overland tour truck at Palmyra, Syria Our trips across Syria on our Oasis Caravan Cairo trip to Istanbul was good fun and we have seen the usual sites on the route. We spent a day in Damascus which was very quiet and everyone enjoyed seeing this great historic city and we had a quiet beautiful bush camp in Palmyra , then Aleppo .

trip was entirely without incident in connection with reports of new protests, which can look much worse on the news and in the field. The atmosphere was good spirit in the big cities we visited with the vast majority of the population supporting President Assad - It seems that people would like to change their constitutions and government personnel, but are behind the president himself. We know there have been problems in small towns, Dera'a and Latakia, but these places are not on our itinerary and our security of travelers is upmost importance so that we never get to all areas where this would be in danger.

Crac de chevalier Crusader Castle in Syria All Travellers Oasis enjoy their time in Syria, which is one of the most hospitable and welcoming country we visit during our travels. That has not changed and the locals are always welcome tourists with open arms and smiles on their faces . We have constantly been in contact with the head office and local representatives on the ground so that we were able to keep our group informed of what happens in the country.

Do not be once we felt threatened along our travels and tourists are very safe (where there are many in the country at the moment). Our trip to Syria coming to an end now, we are out of Turkey tomorrow morning first thing to some Turkish delight and maybe spot of belly dancing .

As Dave said, the safety of our passengers and crew is paramount and we are monitoring the situation Syria closely. Our route takes in Damascus, Palmyra, Crac de Chevalier and Aleppo , but does not include the cities of Deraa and Latakia where major events are held. We are in contact with our crew on every day as well as with agents and local partners in Syria and routes are flexible enough to be changed in the short term, if it became necessary.

Our administration Chris and Steve are now to discover the new Egypt. Heres how they found ... -

Both Chris and Steve directors are currently in Cairo for five days and sent their first blog on how they find the 'new Egypt'

"We arrived in Cairo at 5am and were greeted by Mohamed Khalifa (that meets all our groups Oasis) He is passionate about the" new "Egypt the same. that almost all Egyptians see you, and they all have their own opinions. We had an interesting discussion with Mohamed our transfer 45 min at Hotel Havana in Mohandesseen. with a referendum on the new constitution scheduled for this policy Saturday (December 15th) everyone speaks and Tahrir square and the presidential palace in Heliopolis there are daily demonstrations by pro and anti-government supporters -. All well covered by international television "

" driving if Cairo and visit some of our favorite places is quite surreal because Cairo still appears as usual - busy, chaotic, traffic jammed, noisy and crowded with people rushing about their business or patiently peddling their goods from outlets on the floor. "

"Steve and I went on Sunday night at the disco below the Swiss Inn Hotel in Mohandesseen to celebrate the birthday of one of our friends. After visiting a local Syrian restaurant (most people who have one of our trips and stayed at the Hotel Havana or Swiss Inn will experience the "Syrian" on the corner) for a packed lunch, we thought we could not get better food, but the stuffed shrimp , squid, liver and falafel we had this spicy night make me understand just why Middle Eastern food is probably the best in the world. "

Kyrgyzstan Katie Trip (Part 2) -

Tamara - Kyrgyzstan eagle champioin

from the ... more Kyrgyzstan Katie Trip (part 1)

the day after our fun in Jeti Orguz, some of us chose to watch an eagle screen, where the trainer has presented its 4 times champion eagle - Tamara. Eagle hunters are quite common in Kyrgyzstan and it was great for us to learn about this tradition of someone who was very passionate and obviously cared a lot about his eagle. The screen is impressive, but it was actually heard all about the care and training of an eagle that impressed me most - and the fact that I got to keep Tamara! To end another perfect day (this was the joke of the trip ... like every day was so good!), We created our next back bush camp on the shore of Issyk Kul Lake.

Bush camp on the Issyk Kul lake

the middle of the trip saw us arrive in Kochkor, which is where we had our 'stay "and therefore a bed and a shower of the trip, which was a real treat. The living room is where you stay with a local family in their home, and they are preparing your evening meal and breakfast for you - and say the food was delicious is an understatement

Following the host family we were treated once again for an amazing day of driving through a valley and slowly make our way to Lake song Kol, where we even had a quick photoshoot with some yaks! As we decended to the lake, it reminded me of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanazania but rather than seeing herds of wildebeest, I watched hundreds of herds of horses, sheep and the odd donkey scattered! This was going to be our implementation for the next three nights, a yurt decorated beutifully near the lakeside. For me, this place was just perfect, as the sunsets were glorious, and I fall asleep and wake to the sound of galloping horses nearby. Having never ridden properly in my life, I decided this was the place to do it - and I was very happy and relieved that my horse was pretty docile! This provided plenty of entertainment, as my horse took me on the road, he wanted to go, rather than where the rest of the group went (but somehow we made it back to the yurt)! Thanks to our tour leader also organized a game Ulak Tartysh (a Kyrgy version of polo!), Where a lamb was killed and the body is hung under the leg of a runner and they have to get it to a goal on field. It is a great game to watch, where you get to watch the amazing riding skills of Kyrgy people, and it has become a social event where other residents are mounted on and ended up joining and continuing along the match for the afternoon.

our yurt at Lake Kol song

Sunset on Lake Song Kol

Extreme beat near Lake song Kol

We all felt a little sad to leave the Kol song, but we were in a lovely surprise, our descent was on the other side of the lake, with views which had been seen to be believed - so hopefully the image of extreme beating does some justice

making our way through the mountains, we pass! done to Tash-Rabat, a caravanserai in very good condition, and our leader and driver agreed it was the best along the Silk Road they saw, so something not to be missed.

back to Bishkek my spirits dropped as the journey was nearing its end, but luckily we had time to visit and climb Burana Tower, a large 24m minaret is all that remains of a once thriving city - but now gives you a chance to see the views all around and a time to take in all that we had seen.

Tash Rabat Caravanserai

This trip will stay with me forever, and I hope one day I will return to Kyrgyzstan, but in the meantime, I have my photos and a short video to remember!

Mwendo Project Children and needy orphans -

The Mwendo needy children and Orphan Project (MNCOP) is one of many organizations in the areas we visit that do a brilliant job help others with little funding or resources, so we thought we would give them a listing here! Some of our groups visit the project while Uganda and we sponsor two children.

MNCOP is based in Lake Bunyoni Uganda and provides and promotes health, well-being and the safety of children in need in the region Mwendo. The number of street children and orphans here is growing, largely because of AIDS and poverty. Currently, there are 559 children enrolled in the custody of MNCOP, aged between three and 15 years.

The children are housed in the community under the care of a registered tutor, usually a parent. The living conditions are very basic with most children sleep on a mat or directly on the floor and no electricity or running water.

The project works closely with the primary school Kakomo who paid 7 and 6 teachers unpaid teachers. Five volunteers work directly for MNCOP, educational health programs that teach children about environmental health, preventive medicine and family planning. Volunteers also teach sport, cooking, dance and drama and provide advice. The project promotes health care and the importance of education, encourage children to stay in school and to provide the means for them to do so -. Many children do not go to secondary school because they must work to contribute to family income

MNCOP relies heavily on donations from visitors to the area. Those who wish to contribute may do so during their overland trip to Uganda and can be * sponsor a child for $ 40 per month or can donate. You can also see more details on their website

See what other projects Oasis supports our projects we support page.

* Please note that most overland travel to Uganda include the opportunity to visit a project like this, but it can not be specifically Mwendo project needy children and orphans
