This is an update to our tour leader Claire on the Trans Nile in Africa.
The Namibian town of Swakopmund picturesque, famous for its adrenaline activities, must be one of the favorite places of crews to let their hair down. For me it is the scuba diving from the sky, for Steve, he is the quad for the whole group, there are some quality time in the beverage distribution department of our lodge !!! It is also a good time for Steve to catch some maintenance of the truck and I to get papers and statements made. It happens that we have a fisherman in the truck and we leave the city with 15 fish on ice for braai at Spitzkoppe (thank you Richard!). The roads are still a little messy after the long rainy season and we hit the soft sand in the bed of the newly made river ... time to sand matting 101 and some best practices for Deserts later in the trip ! Gunga team are impressive and so with the help of everyone, we got out of there in no time.
Otjititongwe Cheetah Park is brilliant as always with everyone happy to get up close to the big cats and some fabulous photos. Cheetah Park nights are always fun too, especially the pool tournament and that damn warthog (Phil, I'm still the ultimate champion!) Etosha National Park is also a favorite of the crew we have to go driving game in Gunga. conduct of gambling in the truck gives us a nice high vantage point to watch the animals and we are lucky to see lions, elephants, many antelopes, animals plains and birds of prey.
Some quiet time at night lit watering hole is awarded with the black rhinos, hyenas and a small spotted genet. On the drive we get a glimpse of a Black Mamba who is standing in the truck! Gunga but feared no deadly snake!
One last night of bush camping Namibia and we go through the Caprivi Strip in Botswana. We have a few places to visit, but the top highlight for me will always be the magnificent Okavango Delta where we get away from everything for 3 days in the desert in our Mokoros. The water is high at the moment and it is not long until we see hippos (from a comfortable distance !!). Polers and our guides have lived in this area all their lives and they know all the channels of this vast inland delta. Our days are spent bush walkin
g, relax around our camp site and learn to pole our own Mokoros which is not as easy as it seems. At night, our hosts treated us some traditional songs and dance around the fire and we exchange stories of our very different lifestyles.
Next stop Chobe National Park and our cruise included games along the Chobe River, where we see swimming elephants, hippos everywhere, huge fangs, large Cape buffalo and beautiful sunset. game of the morning route option proves to be the best I have ever heard in this park with the lucky few who have chosen to see the leopard, hunting lions, antelope and rare sand. I would've been there now! Botswana seems to pass too quickly and I almost can not believe that we are already in Zimbabwe. 3 weeks in this journey by land and we did so!
Now for the next major activity on the list! the anniversary of "Sexypants" Steve ... .See this space!
