Perhentian Islands: Paradise or pain -Perhentian Island Kecil | Vagabond Baker
Perhentian Islands, Malaysia
white sand beaches, crystal clear azure? water and very quiet development, it seems that paradise, right Perhentians are the two small islands off the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia ?; they had been on our radar since our last trip to Malaysia. highly recommended by travelers andWe added them to our cowardly route, taking a bus from Cameron Highlands to Kuala Besut and catch the latest "ferry". to the islands We felt ready for some relaxing time at the beach :. nothing but read and dive into the ocean Unfortunately, this n 't quite turn out as we hoped Perhentian Island Kecil | Vagabond Baker now, before I continue with this post, I'll say that I'm not quite a person Beachy .: overall I am far too rough for days idleness. Perhentian Islands promise great opportunities for snorkeling and diving, so I'm really looking forward to explore the underwater world again, something I had not done for a few years.the last ferry of the day waiting for our minibus, leaving later than planned. We have grouped the star who recklessly then bounced across the waves to shower with salt spray. The sun descended toward the ocean when we landed on Pulau Perhentian Kecil, the smaller of the two islands. (Kecil small Besar large). Now all we had to do was get housing. Pulau Perhentian Kecil this is much easier said than done. We failed to book anything before, Valerie Father in Guest House in Cameron Highlands had explained that none of the places took advance reservations. Surely it would not be a problem when we arrived, would it? Perhentian Islands-2358 Yes. Yes, it would be Pulau Perhentian Kecil is beautiful, it is as I have. White sandy beaches, blue sea, unobtrusive development. For the budget traveler, there is a massive pain in the rear for housing: it means a few days of relaxation, you may be expected to become stressful and may be a little uncertain, unless you strike lucky when you get arriving at sunset is the worst possible time to arrive: .. all available beds are made and you are left with the dregs, or expensive roomsWe straggle with other travelers, weary marched up and down the beach asking at each location for a bedroom or a bunk bed with very little chance .Perhentian Island Kecil | Vagabond Baker We ended up in a US $ 60 air room con the station Ombak Inn, basic enough for the price but there was a good shower, however there was much our budget. Sixty dollars !!! The next morning, we woke up early and went asking around again for something cheaper. Like many others were, at least we did not get our luggage this time. Finally, we found a cheap cottage Fatimah Chalets for a more wallet-friendly 40 ringgit (about $ 12: it was in April '14)chalet was very basic, a little tatty with a mozzie net and a fan - although electricity was not always during the day to power .. Unfortunately, they did we for two nights, they seemed disconcertingly vague.Perhentian Island Kecil | Vagabond Baker Still, at least we had a bed We arrived and I was in my bikini faster than the star the day before! Chris was not feeling very well so I go with my towel and my book to the beach and found myself a shady spot under the coconut trees. This was the life! I read, I was swimming, I read, I was swimming, I read, I was swimming. . Bliss The afternoon passed peacefully; the water was deliciously warm and the beach was not busy at all.Perhentian Island Kecil | Vagabond Baker "Your very red legs. Are they Sunburnt?" "No, I do not think so."A few hours later ... Good Lord, I've never been burned this before! I could hardly stand the pain in my legs was excruciating! I told you I'm not a beachy person, that kind of goes to the shows.my first half must have been shaded by palm, my lower half, clearly, less, if at all. Chris managed to buy aloe vera gel to shop along the beach, which provided some relief, but I must admit that I am bedridden for about 36 hours. I could barely walk to the same bathroom. This got me stressed out, I really did not have to go out on the second morning.Chris verified that night to see if we could stay at least one night, but, again, imprecision. We should ask again in the morning What is the difference of hell will make the morning, there were empty chalets The next morning, we were able to book another night. Relief!I was so excited to go diving. We planned on arrival, to go on one day of diving trips, a friend (who had managed to get a bunk in a dormitory) fully recommended and it looked wonderful. Unfortunately, I could not cope: the horror of climbing in and out of the boat with my red raw, tender legs too. I'm empty. The last day, we walked on the beach and hired snorkels from one of the abundant facing the water and swam places from Long Beach. The water was so clear and there was right to fish in shallow waters. As the water was deeper, the fish became more interesting: the living parrot fish and colorful fish with stripes. Later were pale coral clusters, full of marine life, rustling clownfish between feathery fronds. Oh, if only I had an underwater camera! I've seen better elsewhere, but it was always interesting and colorful. The swimming was not an entirely pleasant experience, it seemed to be water stains you stung. tiny electrical pinching as you swim along. Apparently, these are tiny sea lice - jellyfish larvae -.! And they can leave a rash I did not know what they were at the time and they freaked me a bitPulau Perhentian Kecil is quite small, as the name suggests; there is a concrete path from one side of the island to the other and the other coves and beaches can be reached by taxi boat. There are plenty of food options for vegetarians and less for Malaysia, the standard is quite lowOmbak Inn Resort has a beachfront restaurant with a screen cinema and a film is shown every night -. making food unaffordable slightly more attractivePerhentian Island Kecil | Vagabond Baker It is difficult for me to recommend, or not, the Perhentian Islands. because of my stupidity not to apply regular sunscreen and issues of accommodation ridiculous, I feel I definitely did not experience the small island to its full potential . I can not comment on Pulau Perhentian Besar as I have not even go We discovered the reason for the issue of accommodation with our cabins when we returned to the mainland :. places the cheap cottage prefer meet domestic tourists apparently (friendly and very helpful travel agent in Kuala Besut told us that). They can sell a package for housing and food. We skate cheap backpacker standard spend our supply of ringgit and drink elsewhere. So they wait to see if they get all the reservations of Malaysia first., for one, was happy to be back on the mainland. Back to the good food and comfortable accommodation!
Roti Canai, food of the gods!

Roti Canai, food of the gods!

We spent a night in Kuala Besut, feasting on Roti Canai again - oh how I've missed you on this island! The next morning we took a taxi to Tanah Merah and caught a Jungle south line train, down the east.
The Jungle Line
Sounds exciting right? I bet he was, not so long ago, a section line through lush, ancient rainforest, lush journey through a wild land. No more. It should be renamed the Palm Oil line. Utterly depressing, a devastated landscape of mercantilism The slow train through plantations The Jungle line ends in Gemas, a small town where you can get a train to Kuala Lumpur. The train pulled into Gemas early evening and spent the night in any hotel; be warned, we went out for food around 20 pm and most places were closed completely , it was a noodle instant dinner 7Eleven - how throughly disappointing the train to KL was a great start early, but the first class on the train to Malaysia gets you bread to the complementary banana, now it's worth getting up! overall, the Perhentian islands had been disappointing, and they were followed by train even more disappointing Jungle line. But Malaysia would not let me down for long, we arrived in KL. I love this city
