Farewell to Tracy -

After working for Oasis for four and a half years, Tracy is leaving to do what she loves most - travel ! Those of you who have traveled with us in South America or the Middle East may know Tracy either as tour leader on the road or your partner here at headquarters. Here are some of Tracy and how she entered overlanding ...

Tracy - the Oasis Overland South America and Middle East Expert! Born in Australia, there is something 30 years my passion for style Overland travel began as a girl 7 years old when my parents removed me from school for 6 weeks to make a road trip from Perth to Broome, camping in some beautiful places along the way.

once I hit 19, with some other camping trips under my belt, I had a huge desire to travel abroad and doing odd jobs in the hotel industry, I had finally saved enough money to head the UK with my ancestral visa. A trip to Europe and spending Anzac Day at Gallipoli was my first trip, and then the order of the day was Africa. I registered for the trip 54 days Apes & Lakes with Oasis Overland in 04 because I liked the look of the brochure (Back in the Day that was no color in it!). This was the beginning of something, but I did not know what!

Three years passed and after a trip to Morocco, where I decided I needed a change of lifestyle, I applied for a job as a tour leader with Oasis, which I passed three months on our regional Explorer tours in Egypt, nine months on our trucks Middle East and 2 years on our trucks in South America, making great friends and left me with good memories along the way.

a year and a half was then spent working and road tripping in Canada and the US with a friend before joining Oasis Overland office team in October 2013 as America South, Egypt and Morocco 'Expert'!

Tracy and friend! First Oasis truck traveled on Murray with crew legendary Nancy & Jason

favorite country: Too many to choose from but Argentina and Chile are right up there

top thing to pack tablets Anti-inflammatories, nothing worse than being itchy

Top board :. When you arrive in a new place, is not immediately connected to the internet, go out and explore the sights, sounds and smells. There is a big world beyond WIFI!

What is your favorite travel memory? trekking mountain gorillas in Rwanda and hiking in the national park Torres del Paine in Chile, both unforgettable and I to do both if I had the chance.

Thank you Tracy for all your hard work (and cooking) over the years. We'll miss you ... can you please put our offices before leaving! :-)

How to travel by train from Bangkok to Siem Reap

How to travel by train from Bangkok to Siem Reap -The Bangkok to Aranyaprathet train-2089 I had been off the rails too long! Whereas the first three and a half months have been covered exclusively by train, we had not been on for seven weeks through southern Vietnam and Cambodia. The Bangkok to Aranyaprathet train-2079 itched to be shaken down again. The slow train from Siem Reap to Bangkok had my name, a journey of relaxation after all that falls Angkor-raiding. The rail network in Cambodia is slowly restored but at the moment it is only for freight. For now, you must take a bus or a taxi to the Thai border and Siem Reap which takes about 3 hours. This is considerably faster than when we took a taxi on the road six years ago, the road is now paved!bus was cheap and quite comfortable. We bumbled along a videotape of Cambodian karaoke.Arriving in Poipet , the border town, the first bus stop at his desk not staying here. bus continues through the city until it reaches a large "roundabout", where an army of unofficial carriers vie for your bags. With hoisted our backpacks on we walked to the border on foot, it's really not far away. The heat was intense, and if the hot air was dirty with vehicle fumes. The Bangkok to Aranyaprathet train-2081We were eradicated in Cambodia then we crossed the bridge in Thailand, crossing the sadly polluted river that separates the two countries here, join a queue that winds through the building of the 'immigration.I am envious of the sparrows fluttering in the passport control by window vents, the room was warm and the queue was very slow. They attacked the window frames for insects and flew back to Freedom .The icy cold of 7Eleven was heavenly when we finally tracked down the Rongkleu market, just behind the immigration building. Refreshed with cold drinks, we rented a tuk-tuk to take us 6 km Aranyaprathet .of Aranyaprathet station is charming, quaint and tidy, it could not be more in contrast to the chaos of Poipet. Potted plants and flowers, fluttering flags and flawless platform it was like stepping into another world.

The Bangkok to Aranyaprathet Train

We had a lot of time to kill, we found a shady sitting area, watching people, for one hour. Most travelers continue the Poipet travel to Bangkok by bus, but there was few other backpackers waiting for the train in the afternoon. Waiting for the ticket office to open. The Bangkok to Aranyaprathet train-3009 The Aranyaprathet Bangkok train station costs less than $ 2 , there is only one class and is third. The carriages are spacious and very comfortable, warm air is circulated by ceiling fans, cooler air breezes through open windows when the train starts moving.Through agricultural plains we drive, the occasional golden arrow pierces the net landscape. We draw more manicured resorts and trucks fill slowly.guard had been on the train, punching tickets. A small group of girls from school and boarded it came down to eradicate them. The girls laugh and started whipping their mobile phones to shoot their tickets. I was curious, what was so special about them? I slid my ticket back in my pocket when I slipped to the hilt. There punched on my ticket was a heart! I arrived Chris, so was his.I noticed that he had strained a little as he struck but thought nothing of it at the time. Now I looked cautiously but quickly, he would wrinkle the ticket before he stamped. What an amazing man! Providing such simple joy to commuters on the train Aranyaprathet Bangkok , the pleasure it gave young girls from school was priceless and I will cherish my ticket for ever, to remember this comforting act. It was a wonderful welcome back in ThailandIt was dark at the time when the train pulled into the station Hualamphong Bangkok, on time, six hours after we left Aranyaprathet. The train had become very busy as we approached the city.A tuk tuk we transferred to our accommodation booked in Silom. Yes, it is faster to go by bus, but the train ride was wonderful and he became one of my most precious memories railway . I would definitely do it again. Bangkok is one of my favorite cities , bright and vibrant with lots of quirks. On our last trip to Thailand, we spent a long time in Bangkok, visiting the sites and celebrate Songkran, the largest water world struggle. This time, we were not long a few! days before a flight to Burma We shopped and dined and visited near the Khao Yai National Park Thai any kind before we left, more than in another post

Overland Istanbul to Cairo. Part 6 :. Aswan, Luxor and Alexandria, Egypt -Temple of Philae
Later that evening we left Cairo to return in a few days, and took the night train to Aswan ....
We arrived in Aswan and had booked our hotel at noon. From our balcony we could see the side Nile felucca touts disturbing the occasional tourists who were walking along the Corniche. We spent the afternoon getting our bearings. The next day, we wanted to visit the graves of Nobels more on the west bank of the Nile, and the Botanical Garden. We spoke in a felucca , the idea to sail slowly on the Nile sounded wonderful. Chris has got to be rowed to as it was moored on a small island.Once we mounted on the felucca and had left we soon discovered that we had been duped as the price was concerned, essentially doubled the cost . The boat took us on the west bank and the graves, but they were not so impressive. We decided that we could not afford to make the botanical garden and so he agreed to sail us back to the hotel.Unfortunately, this meant sailing upstream, with very little wind it took hours. The botanical garden looked lovely we spent, which added to our disappointment of the trip. The felucca ended up costing us more with baksheesh, blowing our daily budget. You win, you lose some, but it spoil our enjoyment of Aswan. AswanThe afternoon was spent exploring the tourist souk before ending the day at a restaurant by the river for an average meal below . Returning to the hotel, the atmosphere of the city was loaded: Egypt playing in the African Nations (soccer) cup __gVirt_NP_NN_NNPS Egypt won the game, and Aswan has gone mad! Cars were hooting, boats blew their horns, police cars turned on their sirens, all in celebration. The city was singing and singing, it lasted for hours and hours! We had to be up at 3am we had booked a tour. I miraculously fell asleep with the ear pugs. The visit had us crammed into a minibus, collecting guests from other hotels as well, joining the tourist convoy until Abu Simbel .This great temple was moved before the creation of Lake Nasser, it was beautiful. The four colossal statues of Ramses II facing the temple and we stood on the interior was beautifully painted and sculpted.Abu SimbelOur tour continued to the Philae Temple , with a quick stop on Lake Nasser Dam. The temple was also transferred, this time on an island. We had to negotiate a boat to carry us on it.Our minibus group stuck together and we negotiated our crossing. The Philae Temple is picturesque, especially as you approach through the water. It was built around the 4th century BCE and dedicated to Isis, she had found the heart of his brother Osiris killed on the now submerged island of Philae. It was beautifully carved, especially the tops of the flower design of columnsthe last slot on the tour was an old granite quarry . In her is a huge, 42-meter obelisk, partially cut into the rock. He had been abandoned by the ancient Egyptians who have been removed after he successfully. The quarry was fascinating, there were many gaps in the rock where obelisks and columns were removed and now stand in temples, cities and museums around the world, like needle Cleopatra in London -. who had this very career and is one of a pair, the other stands in Central Park, NYWe took the morning train to Luxor and verified in Hotel Nefertiti was beautiful budget. We had a lovely room with a small balcony overlooking a narrow street, totally Egyptian. The rooftop deck chairs and seats and overlooked the Luxor Temple and the Nile to the west bank and the funerary temple of Hatshepsut. This proved to be a great place to meet other travelers, we had some fascinating conversions on the deck watching the sunset on the Nile, beers in hand.Sunset at LuxorHe was a kilometer walk along the ledge Karnak Temple .This vast temple was great to explore the vast pillared hall with its magnificent columns hiroglyphed was spectacular. We spent a few hours wandering around the temples and obelisks, taking it all inWe booked a trip through the hotel to visit the west bank and our guide, Aladin, was brilliant and informative. The temple funeral of Hatshepsut was our first location. This was a three floored building that was built for the embalming of Queen Hatshepsut, it would take seventy days. There was a wonderful art and depicts the trade with Somalia to the south. Most queen pictures had been disfigured by the successor of Hapshetsut Thutmose III.She is one of only two Queens buried in the Valley of the Kings, it was because she was a pharaoh.Funerary Temple of HapshetsutNext was Valley [Desrois, we visited three tombs- Ramses I, III and IV. They were amazing and beautifully decorated, so colorful even after thousands of years. Then came the icing on the cake, the tomb of King Tutankhamun . The tomb was light compared to others, but contained actual mummy as a temporary exhibition. This was amazing, we were face to face with the most famous historical figures, and it was so tiny! His head looked pretty weird, we learned that the royal baby had rocks attached to their scalps to promote the features of royalty.Valley of the KingsWe then visited two graves in the Valley of the Queens . It was quieter, less tourists. The tour concluded with a return boat on the Nile. The ancient Egyptians never lived on the east, west back was reserved for the tombs is where the sun, representing death. That evening we were introduced Sahlab , a delicious hot drink made with milk, semolina powder to thicken and vanilla with sesame seeds sprinkled on above (or nuts). It is traditionally thickened using the powdered root of a particular orchid but I guess cheaper products are used these days. It was like a dream glass of cream, sundae before bedtime. The following day was Valentines, and many residents of Luxor reminded us it was! We visited Luxor Museum , it was very well appointed and had good labels. On display was the mummy of Ramses I's mummy was found in 1800 and sold to a museum curiosity in Niagara. It was later sold to an American and some Egyptologists matched the face and skull to Seti I and Ramses another parent. They realized that it was a royal mummy Ramses I and made his way back to Luxor.Tonight we took the train (expensive) back berth in Cairo. We had our own little two sleeper and were provided with a meal, even if it was meat, more meat on the side. We were woken for breakfast at 4.30 am the next morning and arrived in Cairo to 6.30.Arriving at the station, we immediately booked return tickets a day at Alexandria then stored our luggage at the African House Hostel. The hostel manager was delighted to see Chris again 'and promised us a room upgrade for the night. The train to Alex took two hours and a half, the landscape has changed we followed the Nile to the Mediterranean trees and lush fields. It was overcast and cool in Alex, we visited the National Museum, but it was not 't as good in the museums of Cairo or Luxor. We had lunch followed by some coffee and some pastry, in a few coffee bars before having a look around the library. The modern BA was built to house two million pounds, he certainly did not contain that much though. There was an excellent display of old photographs of Alexandria, as well as a collection of books and ancient manuscripts. We took the night train to Cairo, absolutely exhausted.AlexandriaOur last day in the Middle East was spent catching up on emails and others. We had to Koshary Koshary Sayed Hanafy last and followed with much appreciated G & T in the old colonial bar of the Hotel Windsor. That night we went to Egypt and flew to India, ending our journey by land across the Levant. It was a wonderful adventure rich. The food, people, history and landscape, I will never forget.Luxor at sunset

The Myanmar rail experience

15.58 Add Comment

The experience was both unique and strangely pleasant. It seemed to take ages for the train to leave Yangon behind the spread of the city spread along the train line. A group of boys were playing a game on the secondary tracks, a curious blend of soccer and volleyball in the afternoon sun.The sunset over an industrial vision and the buildings fell away and we were rocking through a rural landscape of bamboo huts, agricultural land plowed and bullock carts , passing a number of massive low-tech brick plants. We all moved to the adjacent carriage, restaurant car, and were huddled around a table drinking beer as the train rattled through the countryside darkening.
It was a challenge to negotiate the rolling, bouncing cars to move along the train to the bathroom, especially with a couple of beers in me. It was like being on a boat on rough seas. About ten o'clock in the evening the restaurant car had emptied significantly and those who remained began to rearrange the seats to form beds , I took the hint leaving Chris and Mike in deep conversation. Climb military dozing on chairs near the door , I was soon back in our compartment, back on my top bunk, Karen and Robert already asleep on opposite berths. The violent irregular motion of the train took some getting used to sleep and did not find me. Chris snuck three hours later, revealing the next morning the guys in the dining car had joined after I left, especially the young men who worked on the train as attendants, and a moment of intoxication was had by all. I must have slept for finished good few hours and I got some remodeling around six. The light was beautiful, morning sun reflecting in flooded rice fields. I spotted a small ruined temple , very reminiscent of Angkor and wrapped in foliage, it increased the plain among some tall palm trees. Everyone went to the dining car for breakfast, but I stayed in the quiet bay to enjoy the peace, light and the landscape through beyond the open window.

Lulu looked at her friend / sister in disgust, in a way they ARE -kidding. Karen encouraged them to take, to do what they wanted with them. The girls looked at each other again - contained probably they could sell oranges on to someone else -. Then tore Karen's hands and walked off on the carriageThere was an interesting act Lulu and his friends had obviously had a lot of interaction with tourists , they knew what we wanted, what we asked for and what we might need, and it was not beyond their pride wait gifts . By their attitude toward oranges, they got in general too. The train left at 17:20, an hour and twenty minutes later than expected and we soon discovered why the guide had described the form as uncomfortable. the whole train violently swung and bounced along the rails as no train, I had never been on. spaciously wide trolleys are designed for wider tracks than the narrower gauge they run on the tracks and did not feel quite as smooth either.

The Myanmar rail experience -

More than most other forms of transport, the train immerses the traveler in the countries it crosses. a slow train can be a window into people's lives and an expression of the way the country works.rail network Myanmar is all this and more. Myanmar railway experience starts at the station, reserving tickets. We requested information to our guest house if they could book tickets, but recommended to stay at the resort.Arriving at the box office kind of see why, the ticketing system is entirely manual, carbon copy paper reams and books on the great books. Not a computer to . We took a taxi to the ticket on our first morning in Yangon, he took us to a window at the back (?) From the main railway station, perhaps because the parking was easier. It looked more like a shop selling auction desk Notes but there was a long teller. Few were open and there was a lack of customers. All signs, and there were many, were in the Burmese script disconcerting. Fortunately, our taxi driver had accompanied us to the counter and asked where we should be.we were directed to a small bank counters to the left. Here there was a board prices with destinations and ticket prices for the listed English foreigners the cost of overnight sleeper in Bagan was reduced from $ 50 to $ 40 and it was from good news! The man who sold our tickets spoke enough English to explain our ticket, he had a very strange accent, unlike anything we had heard, he was chewing betel and odd-sounding words fell from her red mouth -stained showing him his handwritten details. We left the ticket office with two tickets for the night train the next day to Bagan.

I really wanted to take the train, it sounded like a unique experience Burmese and taking the train is something "I do". The Man in Seat61 - first stop site for travel planning - more confirmed; for being a geek like me, it was a must The problem is that it is a service managed by the government , every dollar spent on the ticket goes to the government !. It was another dilemma, the NLD wants the tourist to choose independent service, not to support the government (see previous post). In this case, I would take a bus, or pay a driver. He was a selfish decision, I chose the train. We were not tourists pack shipped escorted round of a public service to another, we were independent travelers who interact with the ordinary people of Burma on a daily basis and taking the Train this interaction is something I very much hope would happen.

After our morning walk around town I met an English guy back to the guest house, hearing the talk by train, I showed him our tickets and talked to him through the process. Mike was eager to experience the train too and had been down to the station to a different ticket office by all accounts, and booked himself on the same train.

three of us took a taxi to the station Yangon and found some empty seats in the huge covered space between the brick and the station fenced-off runs. This "waiting room" was busy with locals and we settled among them.Chris recognized a couple who had been on our flight from Bangkok and when the train did not appear at the scheduled time, we got chatting. It turned out Karen and Robert would be our cabin mates for the trip. A small group of Burmese girls teen sitting in front of us seemed rather puzzled by our conversations peering over the back seat us wide-eyed. When we talked to them but they have become very very shy sudden narrowing behind the seats and laugh, he was cute.A train pulled into the station and the waiting room came to life, but it was not our train: it was the train Mandalay run more one hour late. I read the trains could be terribly unreliable and prone to long delays, we learned that from the get-go, or not-get-go as it was turning out. to 17 hours we were told over the tannoy (in Burmese) that the platform has changed, we confirmed it by an employee of the station, and all feet warm room, waiting there on the deck of the platform 3. Yangon to Bagan train pulled in ten minutes , we only had time to buy fruit off the platform providers before finding the sleeper car.

Our compartment was huge! so spacious, with four bunks, a wardrobe, two windows and a fan overload. The beds were also quite wide. We settled, Mike was in the next compartment with some Burmese passengers. While the train was still standing on the platform we were accosted, in a friendly way, by two girls confident sell us bottles of water, fruit and beer, wondering what they could do something we (apparently) when we refused something.

Lulu , the eldest of two daughters, was particularly clever, she knew how it all worked, we will eventually buy something from her.We bought some water, she disappeared and came back with some fans Wicker, a bargain for 20p. Mike also bought water to discover the plastic seal was missing and they were filled We arrived and they had the bar an air ok, Lulu just shrugged. hey, that's how it goes! The girls strolled in the door of our compartment, they were obviously waiting for a gift or something. We decided it was not something that should be encouraged, especially since we bought things from her. Robert had bought a lot of fruit on the platform, including a bag of large oranges to Karen offered them a couple.

One of the young officers came in, asking if I needed anything. I did not and he struggled, noticing my open cake package. He was one of the guys drink with Chris and Mike and seemed much more confident now. He stressed the cake "Now? A gift for me?". I did not open, intend it to be my breakfast. I promised, if he returned later, he could have what I have not finished. That seemed to satisfy him. There were grapes on the cabinet through the windows, he used, watching the bay. He wanted to see my Kindle, which I had read when he breezed in. I handed over to establish quickly that there was not what he expected.I guess many of his usual tourists iPads these days as he patted the matte screen.

Our basic old Kindle was not the bright, color display, touch screen wonder he hoped! He returned very disappointed with a thing-the-point expression on his face, I was very amused. Our new friend became a regular visitor at bay, and as we neared it Bagan raises its request for a gift. now, he wanted "current money" .Chris revealed had already been a "money now" when they had been drinking the night before. As not to encourage begging!Throughout the morning, the train slowed for junctions and rural stations where women and children were waiting waving at the train station. We agitons back, blissfully think that the people were friendly. Then we realized the sad fact is that they begged.

Begging for food. The lowest train passengers were throwing fruit and other products that was scrapped over by staggering. The train pulled into the Bagan station just after 14 hours, after nineteen hours of travel on the rocking train our legs were somewhat unstable we wobbled out of the car with our bags . later, we met the other travel the guest house in Yangon, most had arrived on buses, especially comfortable business mundane air while a couple had deviated somewhere else on the road and bus trip was rather uncomfortable. I'm glad we took the train, it was a unique and eye-opening experience and I could not wait to get another!

A few hours in Cologne. The adventure began! -

Cologne, Germany The Thursday, October 10 we left London St Pancras on the Eurostar to Brussels. The aim of this adventure is to travel to the UK in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam entirely by train. This was our first step towards Poland.

We left the train 9 am and soon found ourselves gliding through the south of England to the Chunnel. Our bags were packed and bulging, I'm not sure if tempted to go cover is a good idea where the journey takes us to Siberia! {Although we do not travel by air I wanted a small manageable bag ,.}

We had booked three trains Eurostar to Brussels , Brussels Cologne and Cologne Warsaw on the Jan Kiepura sleeper. I made the reservations that we had a few hours to Cologne I thought it would be good to stretch our legs and see a new place. All connections were easy and on time, we came in Cologne Hauptbahnhof afternoon

Brussels Midi There were lockers luggage magical Cologne train station, in freely service. You put your bags in the machine, coin into the slot and a shutter closes and luggage disappears into the ground in a secure box. We were very impressed! Free our bags, we went out into the sun and the huge cathedral, Cologne grandiose. This Gothic church towers over everything and was one of the few buildings in the city to survive World War II

We took a meander along the river and a cobblestone street, through some places quiet until we reach the busy shopping street. The attraction of pastry sellers too and we succumbed to treatment

We did not have a map, but the town was easy to navigate and there were many signs. After the pleasant afternoon we returned to the station to retrieve our luggage. We camped in a café in the station for an hour, it was hot, there were hot drinks and free wifi, what else could you need! There were lots of food options in the station too and we had our evening meal in a noodle bar, it was cheap, gay. and vegetarians.

Cologne, Germany

The sleeper train left at 22.28 and, with a cabin four berth for us, we made our beds and settled in for the night the train sped through the darkness to Poland ... ..

I booked all the trains myself, independently, using Eurostar.com, rail Europe and www.bahn.com I always comparing prices for train between these companies to find the best deals. On track to Mandalay: Train Mail to Thazi

On track to Mandalay: Train Mail to Thazi -Mail Train to Thazi, Burma It was time to take the train again We had three days before our flight back! Bangkok; having chosen out of Mandalay, we now had to get there. Our arrival in Naungshwe (for Inle Lake) was by bus over the mountains, we are now going to repeat much of that trip in reverse, on the mall train Thazi; from there, we could then take the express train to Mandalay. With a lot of advice from the man in seat 61 we go by taxi to Shwenyaung, the nearest town with a Naungshwe railway station. Our taxi driver cheerily pointed out all the sites and temples we had failed to see in our too brief time in the region Arriving at the Shwenyaung station, it took us across to the ticket before saying goodbyeThe station was small and neat; ticketing tourism was a plain fireplace built on one of the interior walls, it reminded me of many English railway stations old back home the whole station reeked of colonialism of a nostalgic manner strangely out of place . Even stranger, there was a prison in the room. There now seems to be a hidden place for a napWe bought our tickets for the Mail Train ($ 7 each for the upper class seats), a journey of ten hours through the mountains Thazi . Where we would spend the nightMail Train to Thazi, Burma The train arrived on time: departure on schedule was 9:40. We boarded and settled into our spacious seats, but dilapidated, and waited. We were in superior class seats with a comfortable and open windows a few more people boarded, beating their bags for the luggage rack with chain: yes, we had been on a Myanmar train, we knew what it was for [!we took the hint and used our backpack straps to attach the bags to the rack lest they pounced on us during the trip. The Mail Train | Burma-4204It appeared that we would not leave on time. An announcement later informed us that there had been an accident further down the track, causing the delay (!): the train finally left half past one delay
Mail Train to Thazi [

the mail train at Thazi rocks and bounces in the typical Burmese fashion!

train followed the path of the hill for Kalaw, round buckle and under "circle of life" : some intelligent railway engineering to mount this particularly steep section of the hill He shook and bounced in typical fashion railway Myanmar - thank you God we tied our bags .!Three hours later, the train pulled into Kalaw and the carriage filled. A local woman with three young children crammed into the already vacant seats in front of us, and all of their luggage Lunch was samosas cost purchased from a supplier on the turbaned platform went through the window :. deliciously crispy and packed with spicy vegetablesThe journey continues, climbing gear away in the mountains along the steep slopes. views we saw on the bus seemed even more spectacular from the station the mountains were covered with forests, dry and dark at this time of the year, down into farmed plains with narrow winding rivers. We switched from one side of a mountain peak to another, passing over gorges on curving viaduct; it was all very beautiful yet gently slow. The Mail Train | Burma-4231 The last hours dragged a little, I am uncomfortable and worried. One of the girls in front of me was perched on a suitcase she had then slipped through, pushing me. She was also uncomfortable and worried as I was, the poor. The day was ending and darkness smothered earth , our vista disappeared. I read and doze.Mail Train to Thazi, Burma Finally (a word I feel that I often use when writing about the Myanmar Railways) train Thazi pulled into station, miraculously only half an hour late! Tired and hungry, we followed the small crowd off the platform and found the ticket, stop buying tickets for our trip. Annoyingly, they would not sell them to us (probably could not be bothered with all the paperwork at that time of night) and told us to buy them in the morning. We walked the short distance to the guest house, hoping they would have room since we had not booked anything. a French couple were unloading their bags off a horse cart we arrived, they had also got off the train.super-friendly staff at Moonlight Guest House showed us what was available, we - coming second - got a double room ($ 10) fan and shared bathroom (share without one, the four of us were the only guests), while the French couple have air conditioning. Our room was tiny and fragile but had a quaint charm and was clean and neat.9:00 p.m. He was gone, we headed to the restaurant on the ground floor and we had to discuss with the brother of the owner. His English was excellent, he implied that he had lived for some time in America, and we discussed our travel options before and the Myanmar economy. He knew of a property in Yangon which had sold for two and a half million dollars (US) "in a city that does not even adequate sanitation" he said"so expensive!" On saying we intended to take the express train to Mandalay the next morning, he was keen to put us out :. he had once; but it was so terrifying that he had never repeated. He thought the train could jump the rails, it was so fast and so violently inflatable. We assured him that we had already mounted a Myanmar couple of trains and we preferred the bus. The next morning, our alarm clock rang at 3:30 , we quickly got up, dressed and left. The brother of the owner was and wished us a good farewell at the door.We went to the station, which was already very busy, and I sat with the bags while Chris bought our tickets ($ 7 each for upper seat on the train 3 ) .We waited on the platform, an employee of the station to where we needed to get up when the train came, how exceptionally organized! When the train did arrive (on time!) Transport numbers were in the Burmese script but we quickly found the right.train to Mandalay, Burma This train is express in Mandalay, was already full , we found our seats in the upper class seat :. these seats, in fact the whole journey, yesterday was about much more intelligent mail being the equivalent transportI huddled in my seat and quickly triggered train, rolling down the line. I now fully understood the alarm of man guesthouse to train, express train certainly lived up to its name. He moved so much faster than all trains in Myanmar we had previously been on the speed seemed to amplify the bumps and rocking. We were violently bounced in our seats as the train sped along to Mandalay: he did not feel safe at allWe have spent rustic scenes of farm life: cattle pulling plows and rotating the shaft; rice with cone workers. These cap pastoral scenes continued and repeated until we approached Mandalay; , then the landscape has become more urban: brick walls, barbed wire, warehouses and abundant litter pressing The trip lasted half past three ET we pulled into Mandalay just before 9am. It took a while for us to get our bearings and find the exit, the station was enormousoutside temperature was unbearable, even at this early hour. by the time we reached our hotel (walk), we were soaked with sweat. Fortunately, we were able to check right away, and our deliciously cool air-conditioned room has become a sanctuary for the rest of the morning Hotel Yandanarbon was smart and fantasy. A bell boy showed us to our room ($ 35 for air conditioning, bathroom). We ventured out for lunch, washed and refreshed. Under the blistering midday sun, we went to Marie-Min, a vegetarian Indian restaurant down a pretty lane near the palace. A sign out front declared 'Be Kind to Animals Them By not eating . We feasted like kings, had burst. Intending to explore some of the city after we returned from the palace wall but it was terribly hot and we were tired traveling. Our 10 days Myanmar had flown by, each and an early start each day filled with adventure. He was wonderfully exhaustingNow he had caught up with us, we both aspired to our comfortable beds and air conditioned room. Perhaps we head for the sunset later, up the hill Mandalay. A poster in the elevator of the hotel informed us that free rum sours were offered in the rooftop restaurant 16: 30-18: 30, perfect for toasting the sunset

Flying back to Bangkok

Yes, we were just lazy. Our final extinction in Burma has been seen from the roof of a mid-range hotel in Mandalay with a free cocktail (or four). We could see Mandalay Hill, he was nice enough to where we were standing! We flew back to Bangkok the next day, after discovering that AirAsia has provided a free shuttle from the city to the airport , which is inconvenient 45km south.
a ten-day trip was not long enough, especially for both casual travelers like us. Our disinterest in Mandalay was testament to this, we needed to slow down, take a day or two 'off' between sites so that we can arrive refreshed and ready to embrace each new destination. again, there was so much to see, so many more places to visit and so many things to experience. I really want to come back, Myanmar / Burma over exceeded my expectations, it is a truly unique and fascinating countryI would soon be back if, while tourism is still relatively weak and flawed. This is a country on the brink of change. Even on this short trip across the country, visiting places of interest, we were constantly reminded that Myanmar was largely preserved tourism so far. We had a genuine, friendly helpfulness that is extremely rare in our world these days tourists devoured. Myanmar / Burma
